Children under the age of 6 will ride double with an experienced guide. Six year olds have the option of choosing to ride with a guide or on their own. Ages 7 and up will ride on their own. ▌Read More about Dead Broke Farm
CAMP FACILITIES: Dead Broke Farm has beautiful, wooded trails and is home to more than 35 horses and lots of other farm animals. Campers have access to an air conditioned clubhouse, jungle gym, and the shaded horse hitching area.
CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Dead Broke Farm has been offering horseback riding camp since 2006 and have subsequently hired mature teenage guides who attended our camp as 5 year-olds! We strive to nurture kids' love of animals and the outdoors and welcome their continued patronage in our riding lessons and trail riding programs till they are old enough to become a volunteer or paid staff member.
We have lots of farm animals to see and enjoy including horses, ponies, dogs, cats, cows, sheep, goats, donkeys, and more. The list varies but there are always lots of animals to enjoy and learn about.
Our core focus is on the horseback riding. But when they aren't riding, they can watch videos in the air conditioned club house, play foosball, play on the jungle gym, or help the guides as they go about caring for our horses and other animals. On given days, we will also take them to: 1) visit the cows, alpacas, donkeys, and other animals, 2) see the puppies available at that time, 3) see the pond and the horses in the more remote pastures, or 4) to pick blackberries or blueberries (dependent upon their availability during the week your child attends camp).
And if parents want to join their kids out on the trails, we offer a $10 discount to parents while their kids are attending camp. It's a fun family experience, and it allows the kids to show off how much they've leaned during their week at camp.
FAMILY CAMP SESSION(S): Any age can attend our camp provided you are at least 5 years old or older. We've had mothers and grandmothers attend camp with their kids - not because they had to - but because they wanted to experience the horse camp together. This is a great option for out-of-state situations or instances where the Mom or Grandmother enjoy riding as much as the kids.
YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Dead Broke Farm offers guided trail rides, birthday parties, pony rides, and lessons year-round for all ages. Kids and adults are welcome to ride with us.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Talisman offers a variety of camp programs for kids with ADHD or on the autism spectrum, divided by age. Younger campers join one of our campus-based programs and join in traditional camp activities, from rock-climbing and hiking, to swimming, archery, and arts and crafts. Older campers choose from a number of expedition-based programs, including backpacking, canoeing, climbing and caving.
All staff receive over 2 weeks of training in both hard skills (First Aid, Lifeguarding, camping skills, bus driving) and soft skills (building relationships, problem-solving, understanding of our population, etc.). All staff receive a background check and drug screen, and go through a thorough interview and reference check process.
Talisman Programs has been ACA-accredited since 1988. We operate in the National Forests under permit. Staff leading more involved activities (e.g., rock climbing) hold certifications in facilitation and safety in those areas.
Talisman has been providing programs for special needs populations since 1980, refining our focus over the years to ADHD and autism. We believe every child wants to do well, and that each child has unique strengths, struggles, and outlooks on life. We use a variety of tools and approaches to meet each child where he or she is and help them meet their objectives in socially appropriate and fulfilling ways.
CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Teens ages 14-17 and young adults 18-22 can take our Leadership course to develop more advanced skills. Successful completion can lead to acceptance to our Krewe program, an on-campus job-skill-building session. This is an invitation-only program for returning campers who qualify.
CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: We established the Talisman Scholarship fund through the American Camp Association, allowing for tax-deductible contributions. SOAR's programs are designed to allow students the opportunity to increase their independence while away from home. Independence is gained through self-motivation and life skills instruction. With this in mind, we involve our students in many decision making processes, such as setting individual goals, developing group guidelines, as well as trip and meal planning.
