During the summer months, Extreme Sports Camp stays at Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley Campus in Carbondale, Colorado. During the Fall weekend programs, Extreme Sports Camp meets at their office in Carbondale and participates in activities throughout the valley. The winter program takes place at Snowmass Village and Ski Resort, specifically at the Viceroy.
CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Our staff at Extreme Sports Camp are educated and experienced in working with individuals across the autism spectrum and at any level of athletic ability. Certifications within the staff vary from Teacher Certifications, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, Behavior Specialists, and Vocational Rehabilitation.
Extreme Sports Camp is embarking on their second winter season as a PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America) school for autism. Our mission is to enhance the health, social engagement, and personal growth of people with autism through challenging, attainable, and enjoyable recreational, athletic, and work programs. Unlike their typical peers, children and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have few opportunities to experience the more advanced, age-appropriate activities which truly challenge them.
Extreme Sports Camp provides this opportunity and the underlying instructional approach to realize it. ESC believes that learning any activity is best accomplished through sustained and repeated immersion, coupled with the expectation that the participant can in fact progress to the next level.
We have chosen activities that can be extreme to an ASD child but which can also be mastered by that child through incremental learning. The activity provides an intrinsic motivation to learn and work, and the staff of ESC provides the specialized instruction to enable the camper to succeed.
Extreme Sports Camp was founded in 2004 in Aspen, Colorado.
CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Scholarship applications don't have to be submitted at the same time that you register- the earlier we receive them, the better! If your child lives in the local area (between Aspen and Parachute) and you want to enter him or her into the camp for respite reason, you may be qualified for assistance from The Valley Autism Assistance Fund, a charitable initiative of the Aspen Valley Foundation that provides monetary support to local families with members on the autism spectrum.
Please see the Aspen Valley Foundation website for more information and application instructions.
External scholarships are available as well. Autism Care and Treatment Today offers scholarships to families, with priority going to military families and families with more than one child affected with autism. See Our Camp Website Link: www.act-today.org for more information.
FAMILY CAMP SESSION(S): During our summer programs, we offer a Family Session, where families are able to come stay overnight and participate in the activities with their children.
YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Extreme Sports Camp offers a fun, rewarding, and challenging overnight sports camp that provides the opportunities and support for children and adults on the autism spectrum to progress in active sports. Our staff is experienced in working with individuals across the spectrum and at any level of athletic ability. We know that people with autism can succeed at recreational sports they just need the chance and the appropriate instructional approach.
Whether your camper's goal is improving athletic ability or building friendships and deepening social skills, Extreme Sports Camp has what you need! Participants experience sports activities each day that include wake boarding, water skiing, tubing, biking, rock climbing, white water kayaking, climbing on a ropes challenge course, hiking, and swimming. Activities are repeated throughout the week to build skills and confidence.
At our base camp at the Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley campus, ESC offers supplemental activities in a social environment such as yoga, games, movies, therapeutic drumming and dancing, and music in the park, as well as low-key athletics such as disk golf and field sports. We also now offer an adult-specific program lead by a dedicated Adult Team Supervisor. This program includes our regular sports plus employment-skills enhancement.
Depending on the individual's skill level, participants can assist our counseling, logistics and sports instruction staff, or they can focus on fully-supported development of discrete job tasks. Training is in the outdoor sports and recreation field in an ASD-friendly environment and is fully individualized. Our location on a community college campus facilitates age-appropriate living and working away from family. ESC is known for its winter ski/snowbard programs and summer camps; but we don't just disappear during the spring and fall! Our weekend program runs throughout the school year, offering a variety of outdoor (and some indoor) activities throughout the Roaring Fork Valley to small groups of no more than seven local participants from Aspen or the Roaring Fork Valley.
The program is designed for individuals anywhere on the autism spectrum from age six and up. Our pioneering methods combine relationship-based, social-emotional supports, embedded motivators & positive reinforcements plus sports proficiency instruction & analytics are effective for ANY skill level! At the Winter Day Camp, we enjoy 5 days of skiing and snowboarding at Snowmass, Colorado, one of the worlds premier family-friendly ski resorts just a few miles outside of Aspen. The private lesson option pairs campers with Aspen Skiing Company instructors trained in working with persons with autism. Because it is a 1:1 program, private lessons allow for greater flexibility and convenience for participants than the camp program while still providing them the same quality ski/ snowboard instruction.
Families that want their students to enjoy a lesson with an Aspen Ski Company professional instructor while developing their social skills in a mainstream environment can request to sign-up for our buddy-supported group lessons. Supervised by an ESC buddy, enrolled students will participate in one of Aspen Skiing Companys group lessons alongside neuro-typical learners of the same age group and skill level. The buddy-supported group lessons package includes assistance from an ESC buddy throughout the day. Improve Basic Life Skills! Adult Participants improve their social, vocational, daily living, and athletic skills with Extreme Sports Camp's trademark 1:1 support.
At ESC, we know that there are limited resources available for adults with autism after leaving school to facilitate their entry into the outside world. But adults with autism want to live dignified lives, just like other adults! So ESC has joined the growing national and global adult autism support movement by offering assistance and opportunities for young adults to integrate themselves in the mainstream Aspen and Roaring Fork Valley Community.
We learn vocational skills through job training and job hunting with our HIRE Adult Program, social skills through age-appropriate activities such as dining out and going to concerts, daily living skills through community living in ESC's camp house in Carbondale, Colorado, and athletic skills through ESC's classic athletic activities such as swimming, wake boarding, and hiking.
Our approach is thus holistic, attending to every aspect of our participant's maturing personality, and communal, incorporating participants into all facets of life in the valley and promoting community autism awareness. We recognize that people with autism are as multifaceted and are social beings as much as anyone else.

On this day we will be exploring leadership and what it means to be a leader. We will discuss personal power, body language and communication. We will spend the day working with these topics and learning to lead the horses in a safe and productive way.
Wednesday: Honesty and Conflict
On the third day of camp we will be exploring honesty and conflict. We will spend time educating the girl’s about their brain’s and their body’s reactions to fear and conflict, in an effort to teach them how to work with difficult emotions in a positive way. We will be “joining” with the horses on this day. This activity is all about honesty, connection and relationship.
Thursday: Feeling Powerful
On this day we will be working on the skills we have built so far and we will be increasing our horsemanship skills in preparation for riding on Day 5. In order to feel powerful we need to be able to calm ourselves, be a leader, and communicate honestly. We will use all of these skills in an activity with the horses, concentrating on communication, trust and self-worth.
Friday: Intimacy and Trust
The last day! On this day we will be riding all day long. We will be bringing in all of the tools we have built since Day 1 and we will be celebrating all we have learned and done in the 5 days.

OTHER CAMP INFO: WHAT IS EQUINE THERAPY?
Equine Therapy believes that the use of horses in therapy fosters personal growth and exploration. It can involve riding, lunging, leading, feeding, grooming and herd work dependent on each individual’s needs and desires. It occurs mostly outside in a field or a stall with horses. It has been known to assist many different people with a variety of needs and hopes in therapy.
WHY EQUINE THERAPY?
The horse is an intuitive creature known for its ability to connect with humans and maintain its wild and primal nature. The connection with the horse fosters increased self-esteem and confidence
Working with horses teaches the importance of appropriate boundaries. It increases an individual’s ability to express their needs and emotions clearly.
